ALCON LAUNCHING TOTAL30 THIS MONTH
Alcon recently announced plans to launch Total30, the first monthly replacement, Water Gradient lens, that the company says feels like nothing, even on day 30. Featuring Alcon’s proprietary Water Gradient material first introduced with Dailies Total1 contact lenses, Total30 provides a reusable lens that approaches 100% water at the surface, so all that touches the eye is a gentle cushion of moisture, according to the company.
The reusable, Water Gradient design of Total30 is made possible by the introduction of new biomimetic Celligent Technology, which Alcon says combines a biomimetic surface and a unique lens chemistry to help resist bacteria and lipid deposits. The lens features an inherently lubricous surface that is as soft as the human cornea, according to the company. Alcon says that the Water Gradient surface of Total30 is durable and remains intact during a full month of wear with daily cleaning, disinfecting, and storing. The lens is compatible with all lens care solutions, according to the company.
Total30 is manufactured in lehfilcon A, which has a core water content of 55%, a surface water content of ~100%, a core modulus of 0.6MPa, a surface modulus of 0.046MPa, and a reported Dk/t of 154 @ –3.00D. Parameters include 8.4mm base curve, 14.2mm diameter, and sphere powers of +8.00D to +6.50D (0.50D steps), +6.00D to +0.25D (0.25D steps), –0.25D to –8.00D (0.25D steps), and –8.50D to –12.00D (0.50D steps). It has a center thickness of 0.09mm at –3.00D, Class I UV absorption, and HEVL filtration. Total30 sphere will be commercially available in the United States beginning this month. In Europe, Total30 will be rolled out to a limited number of countries in 2021, with full commercial availability in early 2022. Call (800) 241-5999 or visit https://professional.myalcon.com . ■
