The Myopia Collective Names Inaugural Change Agents
The American Optometric Association (AOA) and CooperVision announced the inaugural cohort of Change Agents for The Myopia Collective. This partnership aims to rally the optometry profession and its allies to shift the focus on myopia from mere correction to comprehensive treatment. More than 60 eyecare professionals (ECPs) were appointed as Change Agents, with individuals from each U.S. state ensuring nationwide representation. A comprehensive list is available on The Myopia Collective’s website.
In September, Change Agents will participate in a multiday workshop in Chicago that will cover proven techniques for growing a myopia management practice, strategies for state and federal outreach, and updates on the current landscape of children’s vision. Change Agents will also share how to engage other health care professionals, legislators, and community members that look after children.
UT Board of Regents Approves Proposal for UTRGV School of Optometry
The University of Texas (UT) System Board of Regents approved UT Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV)’s proposal to establish a new school of optometry along with a new doctor of optometry degree.
Thursday’s approval was the first step in the development process, which will take several years and require additional approvals from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. UTRGV could welcome its first School of Optometry class as early as fall 2027, becoming just the third optometry school in the state of Texas.
The school is expected to enroll about 40 students per cohort, and will require approximately 15 full-time faculty—a mix of research-active science faculty and clinical faculty licensed in Texas.
