New Daily Disposable Multifocal Launches

Bausch + Lomb (B+L) has announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued marketing clearance for Biotrue Oneday for Presbyopia (nesofilcon A, 78% water) soft (hydrophilic) contact lenses. The new lens combines the HyperGel material of the Biotrue Oneday spherical daily disposable lens with the 3-Zone Progressive design (and fitting process) of the PureVision2 Multi-Focal for Presbyopia lens to provide comfortable vision throughout the day and exceptional vision across near, intermediate, and distance, according to the company.

B+L states that the HyperGel material is designed to work like the eye by meeting the oxygen level that the open eye needs for healthy, white eyes while matching the cornea’s water content and mimicking the lipid layer by using a surfactant-enriched lens surface to retain moisture and lens shape throughout the day.

Parameters of Biotrue Oneday for Presbyopia include 8.6mm base curve, 14.2mm diameter, sphere powers of +6.00D to –9.00D (in 0.25D steps) including plano, and a Low add with center-near aspheric optics. Lipid-Based Eye Drop Returns to Market

Bausch + Lomb (B+L) also recently announced the availability of Soothe Xtra Protection (XP) eye drops with Restoryl, an emulsion system featuring a proprietary blend of mineral oils and interfacial molecules. The eye drops target the main source of dry eye symptoms by replenishing the lipid layer of the tear film, according to the company.

B+L states that by restoring lipid layer thickness, Soothe XP addresses a key component in the onset of dry eye symptoms and that it goes further than most other dry eye drops on the market to address the most common cause of dry eye symptoms.

The original Soothe XP was voluntarily recalled by B+L in 2011 because the preservative efficacy of certain lots was not maintained through the shelf-life expiration. The product is now preserved with polyquaternium-1 (PQ1) and has a borate buffer system, both of which are widely used in ophthalmic formulations, according to the company.

Vision Testing Software Integrates Patient Education Materials

M&S Technologies, a producer of computerized vision testing systems, announced that the newest version of its Smart System 20/20 software includes integration with Echo patient education from Eyemaginations.

The Smart System 20/20 system includes eETDRS (Electronic Early Detection of Diabetic Retinopathy Study), contrast sensitivity testing protocols with normative data, electronic low vision testing (eLVT), a variety of charts, rich multimedia, and integration with the leaders in automated refraction technology, according to the company. M&S Technologies says all of the software is integrated into an easy-to-install computer and monitor. The Echo system offers anatomical imagery, provides draw-on-screen capabilities, and plays videos.

Some of the new integration features include access to all Echo playlists from the remote control or Smart System Tablet; the ability to assign frequently used Echo playlists to specific buttons on the remote or tablet; and integration with Marco TRS “3rd Tab” to assign up to 18 playlists.
