First Contact Lens for Digital Device Users Begins Rolling Out

CooperVision, Inc. recently announced the introduction of its Biofinity Energys with Digital Zone Optics lens design, a contact lens specifically created for digital device users. The lenses began rolling out on a phased basis in the United States in July and will enter select European markets later this year.

Biofinity Energys’ Digital Zone Optics design integrates multiple front-surface aspheric curves across the entire optical zone that are designed to distribute power evenly, simulating more positive power in the center of the lens. CooperVision says that this helps ease accommodative burden as wearers move their gaze from on-screen to off-screen and back with less effort. The lenses also include the company’s Aquaform Technology and incorporate a smooth, naturally wettable surface design with a special rounded edge, which CooperVision says reduces conjunctival interaction, improving wearing comfort. Biofinity Energys wearers may notice a difference after a period of several days, according to the company.

Biofinity Energys lenses will be available in the same material (comfilcon A) and parameter range as Biofinity sphere lenses, with an 8.6mm base curve, 0.08mm center thickness at –3.00D, 14.0mm diameter, sphere powers from +8.00D to –12.00D, and Dk/t of 160 at –3.00D. Scleral Lens Now Offers Quadrant-Specific Landing Zones

Art Optical’s 16.5mm Ampleye scleral lens, which was first reported in the May 2016 Product Spectrum, can now be customized with Quadrant Specific Control Technology, which allows practitioners to independently manage up to four quadrants of the scleral landing (SLZ) area. Each quadrant can be adjusted up to 375µm higher or lower from a zero position. Using the Quad Control feature, Ampleye can be customized to compensate for scleral asymmetry as well as to vault pterygia, pingueculas, and limbal scars.

Daily Disposables Expand to High Minus and Plus Powers

Alcon has expanded the parameters of both Dailies Total1 and Dailies AquaComfort Plus contact lenses.

Dailies AquaComfort Plus contact lenses were available in sphere powers of +0.50D to +6.00D (in 0.25D steps), –0.50D to –6.00D (in 0.25D steps), and –6.50D to –10.00D (in 0.50D steps). Their expanded range now includes high minus lenses—ranging from –10.50D to –15.00D (in 0.50D steps)—and high plus power lenses—ranging from +6.50D to +8.00D (in 0.50D steps).

New Software for Portable Ophthalmic Imager

Volk Optical has released Pictor Workstation, an add-on software platform for the company’s Pictor Plus handheld imager.

With wireless connectivity and DICOM file support, Pictor Workstation enables records management without immediate access to a desktop computer. In addition, image transfer via WiFi or USB from the Pictor Plus camera to EMR or PACS is automated.
