NEW SCLERAL FOR REGULAR CORNEAS, SCLERAL DIAGNOSTIC SET EXPANSION
Bausch + Lomb’s Specialty Vision Products (B+L SVP) business has introduced the Zen RC scleral contact lens, which is specifically designed to fit normal corneas. It also features SmartCurve technology, which simplifies the fitting process by giving practitioners the ability to modify to the desired parameters, according to the company.
B+L SVP says that the Zen RC scleral lens can be customized to nearly any parameter, though fitting within the standard parameters should be adequate for most patients. Toric peripheral curves, customized center thickness, flexure controlling profiles, and front-toric prescriptions can also be ordered when needed.
Zen RC standard parameters include a sagittal depth range of 3,500 to 5,000 microns in 10-micron steps (fully customizable), 14.8mm and 15.4mm diameter, powers of ±20.00D, and an advanced peripheral system that includes Steep-10 thru Steep-1, Standard, and Flat-1 thru Flat-10 (in 30-micron increments).
In other news, B+L SVP has launched the Zenlens diagnostic lenses in a new 28-lens set format. Adding to the classic Zenlens 24-lens Dx format—which features six lenses in two diameters (16mm and 17mm) and two separate designs (prolate and oblate)—the new 28-lens set adds four diagnostic lenses with toric peripheral curves.
According to the company, the additional Dx lenses can help specialty lens fitters quickly and accurately assess scleral toricity to better determine proper peripheral lens toricity with the Zenlens toric peripheral system. Call (800) 553-5340 or visit www.aldenoptical.com/zenlens ■
SIHY TORIC ROLLOUT BEGINS
CooperVision, Inc. recently announced the beginning of its limited rollout of Avaira Vitality Toric; the full rollout is expected this spring. The lens is the latest addition to the new Avaira Vitality family, which was first introduced last summer with the launch of Avaira Vitality sphere lenses.
Made from a new silicone hydrogel material (fanfilcon A), Avaira Vitality Toric delivers a higher water content (55%). UV protection has also been improved to Class I. In addition, a uniform horizontal ISO thickness improves lens stability and reduces rotation, and a large toric optic zone provides clear visual acuity, according to the company. CooperVision says that an optimized ballast toric design provides a stable, comfortable fit, while its smooth, continuous ballast maximizes comfort during eyelid interaction.
Avaira Vitality Toric is available in a power range of plano to –6.00D, with cylinder options of –0.75D, –1.25D, and –1.75D in axes from 10° to 180° in 10° steps. The lens has a modulus of 0.6MPa, a Dk of 90, and a Dk/t of 90. The base curve is 8.5mm, and the diameter is 14.5mm. Plus powers, high minus powers, and a –2.25D cylinder will be available later in 2017. Call (800) 341-2020 or visit www.coopervision.com/contact-lenses/avaira-vitality ■
PARAMETER EXPANSION FOR SIHY MULTIFOCALc
Bausch + Lomb Ultra for Presbyopia contact lenses are now available in an expanded parameter range. Since the contact lenses first launched in February 2016, Bausch + Lomb Ultra for Presbyopia contact lenses have been available in parameters between –7.00D to +2.00D. The expansion now extends the power range available to include +4.50D to –10.00D (in 0.25D steps) in both low add and high add. Additional parameters are expected to be introduced later this year. SOFT LENS FOR KERATOCONUS NOW AVAILABLE IN UNITED STATES
As reported in last month’s News Spectrum, Menicon America, Inc., Menicon’s US subsidiary, launched the Rose K2 Soft contact lens design for irregular corneas at the Global Specialty Lens Symposium. Dr. Paul Rose led the development of this three-month-replacement lens.
Rose K2 Soft uses the same five-step fitting method common to all Rose K designs. It features an aspheric back optic zone, front-surface toricity, and front-surface aberration control. Additionally, Rose K2 Soft offers precise edge lift control, prism ballast stabilization, and reverse geometry, according to Menicon.
Parameters include base curves of 7.40mm to 9.00mm in 0.20mm steps, diameters of 14.30mm to 15.30mm in 0.10mm steps (14.80mm standard), sphere powers of –30.00D to +30.00D in 0.25D steps, cylinders of –0.25D to –10.00D in 0.25D steps with axes of 0º to 180º in 1º increments, prism ballast range of 0.75D to 2.00D in 0.05D steps (1.20D standard), center thickness of 0.25mm to 0.60mm in 0.01mm steps (0.35mm standard), and five edge lifts: Standard (0), Standard Increased (+1.0), Double Increased (+2.0), Standard Decreased (–1.0), and Double Decreased (–2.0). Rose K2 Soft is manufactured in Contamac’s Definitive 74 (efrofilcon A), which has a water content of 74%, Dk of 60, and a handling tint.
Rose K2 Soft is available in the United States from ABB Optical Group, Art Optical Contact Lens, Inc., and Blanchard Contact Lens. Call (800) 636-4266 or your local distributor, or visit www.roseklens.com ■
SCLERAL LENS DESIGN EXPANDS
X-Cel Specialty Contacts has expanded its Atlantis Scleral product line with two new options. The Atlantis Scleral Multifocal is a bi-aspheric multifocal design that allows a controllable center-distance zone, resulting in superior distance, near, and intermediate vision, according to X-Cel. The Atlantis Scleral 3D-Vault with Limbal Control Technology allows the limbal sag apex to be adjusted in/out or up/down to customize and optimize the peripheral clearance. Both can be fit utilizing the standard Atlantis fit set. Call (800) 241-9312 or visit www.xcelspecialtycontacts.com ■
