The second annual Global Myopia Symposium (GMS) is upon us—Sept. 16 to 19, 2021. The program committee—consisting of myself; Kate Gifford, PhD, BAppSc(Optom)Hons; Lyndon Jones, PhD, DSc, FCOptom; Shalu Pal, OD; and Jeff Walline, OD, PhD—is tremendously excited to have this opportunity to bring you the most cutting-edge clinical education on myopia. Recently, it seems as though we see new diagnostic or therapeutic developments weekly, if not daily, that allow us to better manage myopia in our young patients. GMS is solely dedicated to addressing all aspect of myopia management in clinical practice today, given the latest of technologies and evidence base.
The five general sessions are loaded with the world’s leading experts on myopia control. New for this year, we have partnered with the Asia Optometric Congress (AOC) to kick off the meeting and to better understand the AOC’s unique insights into managing myopia throughout Asia; given myopia’s high prevalence in most Asian countries, that region is at the forefront of leading information on management strategies and treatments for its patients.
Also new to this year’s meeting is a session titled “International Perspectives on Myopia Management,” which offers perspectives on myopia management from around the globe and will include a discussion of the World Council of Optometry’s recently passed resolution on the standard of care for myopia management.
As noted above, it is an incredibly exciting time in our field as it relates to our ability to control progressive myopia in our children and teens. We look forward to future developments along these lines and do sincerely hope that you join us at this virtual GMS in just a few weeks (www.gmsymposium.com ).
