I cannot help but think that social media platforms are wreaking havoc on grammar, writing, and communication. Think about it—words like “foodie” and “selfie” have been around for not more than 20 years, yet they are used in mainstream media OC without a blink. IRL today we are constrained to 140 characters and have had to invent an entirely new lexicon to communicate else things are TL;DR, right? AFAIK, grammarians and linguists have decried this activity as NSFW. What is an editor to do? I am left SMH.
Communication is ever so important, including the words we choose to speak and right. Because, things can be taken out of context. Emoticons can help with that. Other communications are just to long to take care of. A rebus can help with that. Often we are not unclear in speech and send mixed or confusing messages. What can help with that? Perhaps re-reading that note and grouping one’s thoughts before sending just to make sure it makes actually sense.
Competent communication is critical to the eyecare practice, and to the contact lens patient. What “lens” are you talking about anyway, right? Most conflicts in business simply boil down to poor communication, and, as we all know, 50% of the time, communication works every time, right? “Competence, like truth, beauty, and contact lenses, is in the eye of the beholder.”—Laurence J. Peter
