ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) is here to stay. There will be no avoiding it and it will impact all aspects of our lives—as it already has. AI won’t be used to take over the world, but it is being used to automate processes, improve efficiencies, analyze data, and contribute to clinical and scholarly articles and publications. In fact, I recently asked ChatGPT to write an editorial for Contact Lens Spectrum, and the following is what it produced.
“As the world continues to evolve, the use of contact lenses has become increasingly popular among people of all ages. Whether for vision correction or cosmetic purposes, contact lenses offer a convenient and effective way to improve eyesight and enhance one’s appearance. At Contact Lens Spectrum, we recognize the importance of staying up-to-date with the latest trends and advancements in contact lens technology to ensure that our readers receive accurate and informative information.
In recent years, the contact lens industry has seen significant developments in areas such as materials, design, and wear schedules. These advancements have made contact lenses more comfortable, durable, and convenient than ever before. With the introduction of silicone hydrogel materials, for example, contact lenses have become more breathable and able to retain moisture for longer periods, reducing the risk of dry eyes and discomfort.
In addition to material advancements, contact lens design has also seen improvements. With the introduction of toric and multifocal contact lenses, individuals with astigmatism and presbyopia can now benefit from contact lens wear. This has opened up new opportunities for people who were previously unable to wear contact lenses, allowing them to experience the same level of convenience and comfort as those without vision problems.
Moreover, advancements in contact lens wear schedules have made it possible for individuals to wear contact lenses for extended periods without risking eye health. Daily disposable lenses have become increasingly popular, providing a convenient and hygienic option for people who lead busy lifestyles. Additionally, overnight wear lenses have been developed, allowing for continuous vision correction without the need for daily insertion and removal.
At Contact Lens Spectrum, we strive to provide our readers with the latest news and developments in contact lens technology, along with expert insights and advice from leading professionals in the industry. Our goal is to educate and inform our readers on the benefits and risks of contact lens wear, helping them make informed decisions about their eye health.
In conclusion, contact lenses have come a long way since their inception, and the industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace. As such, it is important for individuals to stay informed about the latest advancements and trends in contact lens technology. At Contact Lens Spectrum, we are committed to providing our readers with accurate and reliable information to help them make informed decisions about their vision and eye health.”
Not bad, but it is unlikely that AI will replace me as editor-in-chief of Contact Lens Spectrum. However, AI will impact the workforce, and in fact, may even eliminate some types of work altogether. Thus, our adoption, use, and oversight are key to using AI as a tool, rather than perceiving it as a threat. As American writer Eliezer Yudkowsky said, “By far, the greatest danger of artificial intelligence is that people conclude too early that they understand it.”
