BAUSCH + LOMB (B+L) has launched Revive custom soft contact lenses, available in spherical, toric, multifocal, and multifocal toric options and designed to fit a broader range of patients, including those who have high or unique prescriptions. According to B+L, Revive custom soft lenses are made with nonionic material, which allows patients to wear them daily for up to three months. ECPs can prescribe Revive with frequent or planned replacement modalities. Here, practitioners who are prescribing these lenses share their clinical experiences.
Please tell us about your experience with the B+L Revive lens.
Roy A. Kline, OD, initially brought Revive contact lenses on board as a good option for his specialty contact lens patients. “With the virtually unlimited parameters, I soon found I was using the lens much more than expected,” he says. “Revive opens up the door to numerous patients whom I simply overlooked as potential contact lens candidates. Instead of using Revive on a limited basis, I found myself using this lens on a weekly basis.”
Who are the best candidates?
According to Dr. Kline, the best candidates for Revive are those patients who have any high degree of refractive correction, whether myopic, hyperopic, or astigmatic, that fall outside the standard parameters of soft contact lenses. “Oftentimes, these are special-needs patients due to irregular corneal topographies or corneal size,” he adds. “Being able to choose the base curve, diameter, and powers to the exact specifications for the patient makes a world of difference to the success.”
Tell us about the fitting process.
For Karen Hoffman, OD, and Jim Hoffman, OD, the fitting process begins by discussing this new lens opportunity with the patient, because many have not considered contact lenses as an option or have dismissed them due to past failures. “Once the [practitioner] has explained the Revive contact lens option and how it would meet the patient’s needs, then the exam results are shared with the fitting consultant at Bausch + Lomb,” they note. “The lenses are designed with the help of the consultant…The actual fitting occurs when the lenses are dispensed and evaluated by the prescriber.
“We check the initial fit and then wait 15 minutes to check the vision and fit and lens alignment,” they continue. “Lenses may be reordered at dispense or at follow-up. Each lens has a 120-day guaranteed fit policy allowing unlimited reorders without returning the previous lenses.”
How has the B+L Revive lens helped with troubleshooting?
“Custom contact lenses often have an extended order and delivery time. So, to make any changes or enhancements, it takes so long that patients become frustrated,” Drs. Hoffman share. “Revive custom lenses have such a quick manufacture and delivery time that it makes prescribing a custom lens pleasant.”
They also note that toric rotation is very noticeable for high astigmats and the Revive design assures that the lens will align where the patient and practitioner require it to fit to provide clear vision. “Multifocal lenses can be a challenge, especially when the patient requires a different power in the near zone,” they share. “The prescribing process is worse when the patient’s pupil does not align with the optics of the lens, however the [technology] solves this problem by allowing custom add powers and zone sizes.”
Tell us about any success stories in that regard.
Dr. Kline recounts the story of apractitioner in hispractice who had trialed all the available contact lenses that would accommodate his prescription: –6.00–4.25x007 OD and –6.75–3.50x175OS. Comfort from any of the previous trials only reached six to eighthours of tolerable wearand his vision was 20/30 at best.He says: “Being able to fit the lenses to his eyes resulted in all-day comfort and 20/15 acuity.[My colleague]kept saying, ‘I simplycan't believe what a difference having the lenses fit to my eyes make.Nothing even came close to the degree of comfort and vision I achieved. These are truly a leap forward for myself and for my patients as well.’”
