Setting the stage for success starts with a positive culture, having a plan and creating talking points. Discuss ways to offer daily disposable contact lenses to all patients starting with the scheduling and/or pre-test routine (e.g., “Have you ever considered wearing contact lenses?”)
Follow-up with “Are you interested in talking to the eyecare practitioner about contact lenses today?” Even if they have never been considered contact lenses, introduce the idea with “There are many new innovations that have improved the comfort of daily disposables. They are available in a wide variety of prescriptions, but ask your practitioner if you are a good candidate for them.”
After the interest has been peaked, now it’s time for the eyecare provider to shine.
The Fit or Re-Fit
New Wearer “After evaluating your vision and eye health, you are an excellent candidate for contact lenses!” Go into specifics about their vision and the advantages (science and health aspects) of daily disposable contact lenses.
Existing Wearer “I know you have been happy with your current contact lenses, but you are actually an excellent candidate for the newest daily disposable contact lenses.” Go into specifics about their vision and the advantages (science and health aspects) of daily disposable contact lenses. If there is a question on cost, keep it simple. Daily disposables cost a little more than the reusable contact lenses, but you make most of that up with the manufacturer rebates and the fact that they will not need to buy cleaning/disinfectant solution any longer.
When the Fit Is Finalized
After completing the successful fitting process, patients will be excited about wearing their new contact lenses and ready to order. Let them know “I have finalized the prescription, and you are now authorized to order your annual supply of contact lenses. Our staff will take care of ordering, rebates and shipping the lenses right to your house.”
Have the office fully prepared for the daily disposable growth and utilize technology along the way and for the ordering process. Many new platforms can allow patients to track the shipping of their order and even notify when it is time to schedule their next exam.
Don’t forget to ask whether anyone else in their family needs to schedule an appointment or is interested in trying contact lenses. A few small tips go a long way for your success and growth with daily disposable contact lenses.
