New Silicone Hydrogel Comes to United States

CooperVision has launched its silicone hydrogel lens Biofinity for daily wear in the United States. Designed with patented Aquaform technology, Biofinity monthly replacement lenses are manufactured in comfilcon A, which offers higher water content, lower modulus and high oxygen transmissibility, according to the company.

CooperVision further states that the Aquaform technology establishes hydrogen bonds with water molecules to create a naturally hydrophilic material that retains water within the lens. In addition, wettability is inherent within the material itself, eliminating the need for additives, coatings, wetting agents or surface treatments, according to CooperVision.

The water content of Biofinity is 48 percent, with a Dk of 128 and Dk/t of 160. Parameters include sphere powers from –0.25D to –6.00D, 8.6mm base curve and 14.0mm diameter.

In other CooperVision product news, the company has expanded the parameters of its Proclear Multifocal Toric. The lens is now available in sphere powers from +20.00D to –20.00D (0.50D steps after ±6.50D), cylinder powers of –0.75D to –5.75D in 0.50D steps, axes in five-degree steps, add powers of +1.00D to +4.00D in 0.50D steps and base curves of 8.4mm and 8.8mm. Get Rapid and Accurate IOP Measurements

Reichert, Inc. has released the Tono-Pen Avia Applanation Tonometer, an applanation tonometer that's small enough to fit in a shirt pocket yet filled with advanced technology, according to Reichert.

The Tono-Pen Avia is similar to the Tono-Pen XL Applanation Tonometer, but features a more ergonomic design, battery power that lasts four times longer and two large LCD screens, according to the company. Reichert claims that new features allow operators to take fast and accurate IOP measurements with minimal training. The instrument is designed to function in any position.
