Tried and True MPS
In the aftermath of Advanced Medical Optics' recall of its Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose solution, the company has introduced Complete Multi-Purpose Solution Easy Rub Formula for soft contact lenses. It combines the original Complete MPS formula with a rub-and-rinse regimen.
This formulation was originally approved in 2002 and has been sold under various brand names globally. It contains Poloxamer 237, four electrolytes and twice the level of preservative (EDTA) as Complete MoisturePlus. AMO states that the formulation has a proven track record of safety based on global use over several years and has not been linked to any of the recently reported multipurpose solution issues. AMO further claims that this formula combines a strong disinfection efficacy with comfort when used as directed. Call (866) 427-8477 or visit www.amo-inc.com.
New Perimeter Technology
Heidelberg Engineering GmbH has introduced its Heidelberg Edge Perimeter (HEP) for early glaucoma testing. According to Heidelberg, the HEP uses a unique new stimulus called Flicker Defined Form, which targets M-cells and has been shown to be highly sensitive to functional loss due to early glaucoma.
HEIDELBERG ENGINEERING'S HEIDELBERG EDGE PERIMETER HELPS WITH EARLY GLAUCOMA DETECTION.
Using flickering black and white patterns, the company says that the stimulus creates an illusory edge where a patient perceives a circular stimulus. Heidelberg also says that not only does this methodology target early glaucoma, it's also more comfortable for patients, resulting in higher test-retest reliability than conventional methods.
The HEP is also designed to work in combination with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph. The company says that with a common data platform and new analysis software, the two instruments provide a combined structure-function analysis to provide new insights into the diagnosis and monitoring of the progression of glaucoma. Long-lasting Dry Eye Relief
Bausch & Lomb now offers Soothe XP Emollient Eye Drops, which provide moisture and contain Restoryl, an advanced lipid restorative that provides a barrier to tear loss for relief that lasts up to eight hours, according to B&L. First introduced in 2004 by Alimera Sciences, Soothe — now renamed Soothe XP — was the first over-the-counter multi-dose emollient-based (lubricating) artificial tear product according to the company. B&L says that Soothe XP is unique in that it re-establishes the eye's protective lipid layer, reducing tear evaporation and sealing in essential moisture. Call (800) 828-9030 or visit www.bausch.com.

New Option for Treating Corneal Ulcers
Vistakon Pharmaceuticals, LLC, has introduced Iquix (levofloxacin ophthalmic solution) 1.5% ocular anti-infective medication — the only newer-generation fluoroquinolone that's FDA-approved to treat corneal ulcers, according to the company.
Iquix is a sterile topical ophthalmic solution that rapidly penetrates corneal tissue and provides broad coverage of the most sight-threatening gram-negative and the most gram-positive pathogens, including Cornyebaterium species, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Viridans group streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens, according to Vistakon Pharmaceuticals. Iquix eradicates targeted pathogens by inhibiting both topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase — a dual mechanism of action similar to that found in newer fluoroquinolones. Iquix is also preservative-free.
