First Water Gradient Lens Launches in U.S.
Alcon’s Dailies Total1 water gradient contact lenses recently made their U.S. debut. The lenses are comprised of a breathable silicone hydrogel core with a water content of 33 percent, which transitions into an ultrasoft hydrophilic surface gel made up of more than 80 percent water content, approaching 100 percent water content at the outer surface, according to the company.
Alcon says that Dailies Total1 lenses have the highest surface lubricity tested and the highest breathability (Dk/t of 156 at the center of a –3.00D lens) of any daily disposable contact lens, and that they deliver exceptional comfort that lasts through the end of the day.
DAILIES TOTAL1 DAILY DISPOSABLE LENSES FEATURE A NEW WATER GRADIENT MATERIAL.
Dailies Total1 water gradient lenses have a diameter of 14.1mm, an 8.5mm base curve, and a center thickness of 0.09mm at –3.00D. They are made from delefilcon A, which has a modulus of 0.7MPa. Current power ranges are –0.50D to –6.00D (in 0.25D steps) and –6.50D to –10.00D (in 0.50D steps). The lenses are available in trial packs of five lenses and in retail packs of 30 lenses and 90 lenses. Call (800) 451-3937 or visit www.dailies.com.
Large-Diameter Case Gets FDA Clearance
Menicon America Inc. announced that its subsidiary Lagado Corporation received FDA clearance for the Menicon Progent Large Diameter Contact Lens Case, a non-ventilated barrel style case designed for deep cleaning large-diameter GP lenses (11mm to 23mm) in Menicon Progent.
The case is molded polycarbonate (PC), and the non-vented screw cap and lens basket are molded acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). The procedure for the new Menicon Progent treatment is identical to that used for smaller lenses, except that the lenses need to be placed in the appropriate basket within the case rather than simply placing the lenses into the holder.
The Progent Large Diameter Contact Lens Case is available for purchase on the Menicon WebStore. The company welcomes eyecare practitioners to call or visit the Menicon WebStore at store.meniconamerica.com/ecp for further information.
SCLERAL WEARERS CAN NOW USE THE PROGENT LARGE DIAMETER CONTACT LENS CASE TO CLEAN THEIR LENSES WITH PROGENT.
New Ultrasound Biomicroscopy System
Quantel Medical has launched its Compact Touch Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM) system in the United States. This portable diagnostic ultrasound system allows physicians to diagnose and obtain measurements of the eye’s anterior segment. UBM technology is the only method available to visualize structures behind the iris and pigmented tissues, allowing clinicians to determine not only the severity of the conditions, but often the underlying cause, according to the company. Quantel Medical says that clinical applications include, among many others, artifact-free measurement of the anterior chamber angle in glaucoma, plateau iris, differentiation of tumors and cysts, and lens/IOL anatomy.
Quantel Medical’s proprietary linear scanning technology utilizes an electromagnetic linear motor, which the company says optimizes image acquisition and resolution in a lightweight design. The Compact Touch UBM was designed for use with the Clearscan sterile probe cover. Call (877) 782-6835 or visit www.quantel-medical.com.
Scleral Lens Line Expands
Visionary Optics LLC has expanded its recently launched Europa Scleral lens line with the release of a 16mm version. The new lens is available in both a seven-lens and a 14-lens diagnostic fitting set. The 16mm lens complements the 18mm version already available. Visionary Optics contends that this refinement of its Jupiter Scleral technology capitalizes on the design principles of a true scleral lens with the goal of improving fit and comfort.
A modified scleral zone and enlarged optic zone are designed to optimize scleral landing and improve corneal vault. The new design also incorporates a reverse curve to fit a wider range of corneas, simplifying the fitting process, according to the company.
