▪ Mr. Emery Stein, president of E&E Optics, Inc., Van Nuys, Calif., passed away on Sept. 18, 2013. Mr. Stein founded E&E Optics with Edward Murad in 1984. E&E Optics manufactures GP contact lenses and is the sole manufacturer and supplier of Superbridge, eLens, and Free Dimension orthokeratology lenses.

The company says that ToriCalc, as a private label option, provides a cost effective business solution and can be branded to meet customer demand, and it is optimized to include client specific features. A monthly license model is unique in the industry and opens up mobile computing solutions to a variety of businesses or groups that desire to increase customer reach and tie mobility to current digital infrastructure, according to the company. ▪ Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. (JJVCI) is now accepting research proposals related to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and the human eye. Specific areas of interest include the following topics: Eye health including photoageing (cataractogenesis, presbyopia, corneal, retinal, conjunctival/limbal changes); Epidemiology of UV-induced ocular disease including geographic, ethnic, and occupational study—proposals may include the study of indoor and outdoor UV radiation as well as increased risk associated with UV exposure in youth; Assessing the protective effect of UV blocking contact lenses on human ocular tissues including methodology, measurement techniques, and clinical endpoints as well as comparative protective effects of contact lenses and spectacles/ sunglasses. ▪ Prevent Blindness America (PBA) recently launched “See Jane See - Women’s Healthy Eyes Now,” a web-based educational campaign dedicated solely to women’s health. Women are at significantly greater risk of blindness or visual impairment compared to men. The causes for some eye conditions, including age, hormonal factors, and certain autoimmune diseases, are often very different for women than for men, and the precautions and treatments may differ as well. See Jane See and the dedicated website, SeeJaneSee. org, offers free information and downloadable tip sheets created specifically for women on a variety of issues across the age spectrum. Information will also include symptoms, causes, and treatment options for a variety of conditions. PBA’s future goals for See Jane See include providing timely information through new articles on women’s vision health written by experts in the field; results of a new national survey; and videos that will address a variety of issues to help women maintain healthy vision for a lifetime.

▪ Transitions Optical, Inc. is challenging consumers to put their eye health knowledge to the test through a new, interactive quiz found at TestYourEyeQ.com. Supported by the Transitions Cultural Connections program, the quiz explores the eye health risks more commonly faced by culturally diverse groups and urges those who are at risk to take charge of their eye health by scheduling regular eye exams and wearing the right eyewear to protect and enhance their vision. The British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) is instituting a new Industry Award program to reward individuals working within the industry for their outstanding contributions to the contact lens profession. Nominations are now being solicited for the inaugural BCLA Industry Award to be presented during the 38th BCLA Clinical Conference and Exhibition, June 6 to 9, 2014 in Birmingham, UK. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 29, 2013. Nominees can work for any company and must be available to receive the award in person from the BCLA President during the BCLA Gala Dinner to be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014. The inaugural Contact Lens Specialist Symposium (CLSS) took place Sept. 29 and 30, 2013 at London’s Heathrow Airport. The meeting attracted more than 100 delegates from 12 different countries who enjoyed two days of comprehensive lectures and exhibitions and an evening of dinner and networking.

The first day featured information about ocular surface shape, from the cornea out to the sclera. The second day examined how this shape could best be served with today’s state-of-the-art contact lenses. Topics discussed included sagittal-height soft lens fitting, GP lens fitting, multifocal lenses, orthokeratology, corneal cross-linking, irregular cornea fitting, and scleral lens fitting.

Optometry Cares - The AOA Foundation is now soliciting essay submissions from third year optometry students (class of 2015) for two scholarship awards: The Dr. Seymour Galina Grant, established at the bequest of the late AOA member Dr. Seymour Galina, and the InfantSee Scholarship Grant, sponsored by Vision West, Inc..

The 2014 Dr. Seymour Galina Grant winner will receive an award of $2,500. The 2014 InfantSee Scholarship will have a first place prize of $5,000, and a runner-up award of $2,500.

▪ The Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) recently presented its TFOS Lifetime Achieve Awards to Kelly K. Nichols, OD, MPH, PhD, FAAO, and Gary N. Foulks, MD. The organization states that both of these individuals have performed extraordinary services for TFOS. Each has served as a Steering Committee member and Subcommittee Chair of the TFOS Dry Eye WorkShop and the TFOS Workshops on Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and Contact Lens Discomfort (CLD). Furthermore, Dr. Nichols chaired, and Dr. Foulks was vice-chair of, the MGD Workshop. In addition, Dr. Foulks, as editor-in-chief of The Ocular Surface (TOS) for many years, has facilitated communication, and promoted a stronger relationship, between TOS and TFOS. Both have played an outstanding role in the growth of TFOS. Accordingly, the TFOS Governing Board has recognized Dr. Nichols’ and Dr. Foulks’ exceptional energy and tireless commitment with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

▪ SynergEyes, Inc. has announced that it will modernize its policies for ordering and returning lenses. To make it easier to do business with the company, SynergEyes is also streamlining other customer-facing procedures.

The policy and procedure changes will include enhancements that save practitioners time and money, give them peace-of-mind when prescribing SynergEyes lenses, and also give them the opportunity to “go green.” Effective Nov. 1, prescribers will no longer need to return lenses to receive credit for discontinued fits, whether they are working with Duette, UltraHealth, or SynergEyes lenses. In addition, the warranty period for all lenses will be 90 days, and receiving credit, when necessary, will be easy and hassle-free. SynergEyes also will be automating a number of procedures, from account setup to billing. Accounts will have the option to receive printed versions of their statements or to go paperless by using an online account management system.
