Report on Lens-Related Discomfort Publishes
With contact lens discomfort (CLD) affecting so many lens wearers—some to the point of discontinuing lens wear—in 2012 the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) initiated the TFOS International Workshop on Contact Lens Discomfort (CLD Workshop). Chaired by Jason J. Nichols, OD, MPH, PhD, FAAO, professor at the University of Houston College of Optometry and editor-in-chief of Contact Lens Spectrum, the CLD Workshop’s goal was to reach a global consensus, using an evidence-based approach, on the definition, etiology, management, and future research avenues and clinical study designs for this condition.
The findings were recently reported in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (www.iovs.org). The CLD Workshop took 18 months to complete and involved 79 experts from around the world. Eight different subcommittees each undertook a specific area of investigation and participated in meetings and presentations on the approach and content.
A summary of the main findings is available in this issue on pp. 49 and 50. The full TFOS CLD Workshop report is available at www.iovs.org. Complete or partial translations will be offered.
