Silicone Hydrogel Colored Lenses Launch
Alcon has launched Air Optix Colors contact lenses, a line of daily wear, monthly replacement color contact lenses developed using silicone hydrogel technology.
Air Optix Colors contact lenses are made of the same lotrafilcon B material as the company’s Air Optix Aqua contact lens. The material features a water content of 33%, oxygen transmissibility of 138 @ –3.00D, and the smooth, permanent plasma surface technology that Alcon says offers superior wettability and lipid deposit resistance for comfort from day 1 to day 30.
AIR OPTIX COLORS OFFERS COLORED CONTACT LENSES IN A SILICONE HYDROGEL MATERIAL.
Alcon has brought its 3-in-1 FreshLook Color-Blends lens technology onto this silicone hydrogel platform, encapsulating the color within the lens material to reduce interaction with the eye. FreshLook ColorBlends technology effectively imitates the subtlety and complexity of natural iris patterns and tones, according to the company.
Air Optix Colors contact lenses will be introduced in nine different colors, ranging from subtle changes (pure hazel, blue, green, grey, and brown), to more vibrant colors (brilliant blue, gemstone green, honey, and sterling grey). Parameters include 8.6mm base curve, 14.2mm diameter, and sphere powers of +6.00D to –6.00D (0.25D steps, plus powers to become available at a later date) and from –6.50D to –8.00D (0.50D steps). No refit is required for current Air Optix Aqua contact lens wearers, according to Alcon. Call (800) 451-3937 or visit www.myalcon.com.

New Eyelid Cleanser
NovaBay Pharmaceuticals recently introduced i-Lid Cleanser Advanced Lid and Lash Cleanser (hypochlorous acid cleansing solution, 0.001% as a preservative). The company says that the cleanser can help patients who have irritation of their eyelids by cleaning their lids and lashes, removing debris and microorganisms.
NovaBay says the key innovation behind the i-Lid Cleanser is the stabilized form of pure hypochlorous acid solution (with no bleach impurities). It has no extraneous buffers, preservatives, or surfactants.
NOVABAY’S I-LID CLEANSER USES HYPOCHLOROUS ACID.
According to the company, in in vitro laboratory models, hypochlorous acid has shown to be fast-acting against bacteria, biofilm, and toxins. Call (510) 899-8800 or visit www.novabay.com.
App for Dry Eye Management
Dr. Heiko Pult has developed The Dry Eye Tool Box iPad App, a professional app aiming to improve dry eye management, to decrease dropout rate in contact lens wearers, and to improve patients’ satisfaction, loyalty, and compliance.
The Dry Eye Tool Box app consists of three modules: (i) a “Dry Eye Screening” module for non-contact lens wearers, naïve-contact lens wearers, and experienced lens wearers; (ii) a “Dry Eye Management” module to diagnose dry eye type and provide appropriate treatment and contact lens recommendations; and (iii) a “Symptometer” module, consisting of one validated questionnaire for non-contact lens wearers (Ocular Surface Disease Index) and one for contact lens wearers.
This app leads users through a practical and evidence-based workflow. Different tests can be used based on users’ equipment. Required objective tests can all be performed using a standard slit lamp microscope; further optional tests are the evaluation of tear film osmolarity or meibography. Visit www.dry-eye-tool-box.com.
