This image shows a non-wetting multifocal GP lens worn by a 69-year-old female. She previously had successfully worn GP lenses without issue. Recently, however, she has been unable to wear them secondary to non-wetting, despite plasma treatment and trying multiple low- and high-Dk materials.

Unfortunately, there are some patients whose ocular environment is such that they are unable to properly wet GP lenses. Many of these patients are menopausal or post-menopausal females. Ultimately, these patients may need to be refit into a hydrogel or silicone hydrogel lens.

Hopefully, new technology in the near future will be available that will allow this select group of patients to return to GP lens wear.
