It’s that time of year when we start to get into the holiday spirit. As I write this, Halloween is a few weeks away, followed by Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year—it is enough to make anyone excited! I am certain that you and yours will be spreading the holiday cheer soon if you are not already doing so.

As you read this editorial in November, 2018 is starting to come to a close. And, at times like this, It can be poignant to reflect on the past year and the important events that mark it with memories both good and bad.

All of this said, it has been our tradition for many years to reflect back upon the previous year and to report on an “Event of the Year” in the January issue of Contact Lens Spectrum. For example, the event of 2017 was the “attack on the integrity of the contact lens prescription”; we called 2016 the “year of the independent contact lens labs”; and the 2015 edition recognized of the passing of Prof. Brien Holden and his extraordinary accomplishments in our profession.
