SYMPOSIUM SPOTLIGHT: GMS PARTNERS WITH AOC FOR EDUCATION CONTENT
The Global Myopia Symposium (GMS) announced a new educational partnership with the Asia Optometric Congress (AOC). The two organizations will focus on providing cutting-edge clinical education for eyecare practitioners. In particular, the GMS-AOC Asia track will be inaugurated at the second annual GMS meeting, taking place Sept. 17 to 19, 2021. Dr. Oliver Woo (Australia), chairman of AOC-Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control, serves as the education coordinator and will be working with the AOC and GMS to specifically coordinate and plan educational activities between the two organizations.
The AOC was officially established in November 2017, whereas its predecessor, the ASEAN Optometric Conference, was founded in 2007. The AOC is a platform for industry partners, vision care practitioners, clinicians, researchers, and academicians to showcase their activities in vision care throughout the entirety of Asia. The current AOC executive council leadership includes Drs. Murphy Chan (president, Malaysia), Charlie Ho (vice president, Philippines), Koh Liang Hwee (hon. secretary, Singapore), and Dian Leila Sari (treasurer, Indonesia), with Tan Kah Ooi and David Chong as chairman and member of Advisory Council to the AOC executive council, respectively. The inaugural biennial conference of the AOC was held in Manila, Philippines in 2016, followed by its second congress in Bali, Indonesia in 2018. The third congress will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Nov. 15 to 16, 2022. AOC has successfully organized two e-symposia in the past 12 months: eAOC2020, with the theme “Vision2020 – Uniquely Asia” in November 2020, and SOA-AOC e-Symposium 2021, with the theme “Orthokeratology and Myopia Management” in May 2021.

1-800 CONTACTS WINS CASE AGAINST FTC ANTITRUST COMPLAINT
1-800 Contacts received a favorable court decision after a five-year battle with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). On June 11, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that the FTC failed to provide evidence to support claims of anticompetitive practices. The court’s decision confirms that the original complaint had no evidentiary merit and that the agreements were lawfully put in place to protect 1-800 Contacts’ trademark. The final ruling states that the FTC “incorrectly concluded that the agreements are an unfair method of competition,” and the court sent the case back to the commission with orders to dismiss the administrative complaint. ■
