PROVIDING THE BEST patient experience and the highest level of contact lens service requires the utilization of technology in many instances. The toughest contact lens fits tend to be some of the most loyal patients. Technology can improve visual outcomes, deliver superior service, and advance the contact lens care provided. Here are a few examples:
1. Ocular surface evaluation: A poor ocular surface will result in poor visual outcomes. Taking the time to understand your patient’s ocular surface often starts with determining the quantity and quality of the meibomian glands. Meibography can provide high-level imaging of those glands. Then, using vital dyes like sodium fluorescein and lissamine green is a quick and easy way to evaluate the ocular surface. Additionally, many advanced topographers can provide insight into the quality of your patient’s tear film. For example, if presbyopic contact lens patients are struggling with their vision, take a step back and utilize technology to evaluate the ocular surface. A poor ocular surface may be the key contributing factor.
2. Myopia control: This is an often-untapped potential in many contact lens clinics. Discussing options to control a child’s advancing myopia starts with baseline axial length measurements. An A-scan or other technology instrument can measure the axial length at baseline and throughout treatment for myopia control. Additionally, topographers are a must for orthokeratology fitting. They will provide the information needed to achieve a well fit lens, which is required for effective treatment (Figures 1 and 2).

3.Corneal clearance: Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) is excellent for assessing the clearance and fit of a scleral lens. The images it provides can be used to educate patients on the importance of vaulting the corneal surface. Technology can help them understand why these lenses require special care to provide the best visual outcome.
Advanced technology is an essential component of advanced care. Not only does it make the fitting process more efficient, but it also improves visual outcomes. Our patients judge the quality of our care based on how well they see. Evaluate your contact lens technology and determine if any upgrades are necessary in your contact lens clinic.
