THIS IS A BIG YEAR FOR US AS WE CELEBRATE OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY. In July 1987, Contact Lens Spectrum printed a hardbound edition commemorating the 100th anniversary of contact lenses—the contact lens centennial edition! We look forward to looking back through the years as we reminisce about the contact lens industry by bringing snippets from that issue to you over the course of this year, starting with the cover below.
As we do so, we will look back, forward, and all around the field of contact lenses. This month, we look back, with the help of that centennial edition. In looking at the table of contents, it is fascinating to think how far we had come in the first 100 years, let alone the subsequent 40 years. In fact, we are surveying the field for the most impactful contact lens event that has happened during our 40 years in print. Let us know what you think by completing a 3-question survey that can be found at bit.ly/CLSat40_Survey.
And, of course, we can’t forget the future of contact lenses. Advanced technologies are key, but on the micro level. Advances might include health status-monitoring contact lenses, virtual reality, and even telescopic (or microscopic) optics. Of course, these will need clinical trials and testing as they likely to require unique designs and materials to be able to be worn on the ocular surface. It is an exciting time to think of the future of contact lenses.
